On a number of occasions I have spoken in support of the NDIS both here in our community and in the federal parliament.
In Canberra I have shared local people’s stories from our community with my colleagues to highlight the importance of supporting people with disabilities in Forde.
Many of the people that I have spoken to said we tend to focus too much on the ‘dis-ability’ and not enough on ‘ability’. Some people living with disabilities are capable of being included in the workforce and are able to make a worthwhile contribution.
My hope for the NDIS is that it will provide support and encouragement for people living with disabilities to feel valued and included in our community.
I hope that the NDIS creates an abundance of opportunity for Australians with disabilities so that they can live full and prosperous lives.
When I return to Canberra over the coming weeks I will be eager to see this legislation introduced in its entirety into the current parliament.
I am looking forward to finding out more about how the scheme will work and the specific eligibility requirements.
I want the government’s assurance that the new tax introduced to fund the NDIS will not be raided for other purposes. I’m also interested in hearing about how the 60% funding shortfall will be provided for, to ensure the NDIS is a reality as soon as possible.
