All levels of government attended the Woolworths site in Ormeau today to officially welcome the construction of the new store on Peachey Road.
Federal Member for Forde, Bert van Manen MP, Gold Coast City Council Acting Mayor, Cr Donna Gates and State Member for Albert, Mark Boothman MP joined Woolworths representatives for a site tour of the proposed 3,800 square metre store.
Bert said it was terrific to see the $4.6 million project come to fruition after almost two years in the making.
“This is a significant investment by Woolworths for the local community,” he said.
“It will be an asset to our local economy through the creation of 240 construction jobs and 120 ongoing retail positions.”
In addition to the new store at Ormeau, construction has also commenced for a new store in Meadowbrook on Loganlea Road.
“It is expected the Meadowbrook site will create similar employment opportunities for local residents,” said Mr van Manen.
If weather permits, both stores are scheduled to open by the end of 2014 or early 2015.
