Local competitors have shone on the national stage in the WorldSkills Australia competition.
Federal Member for Forde Bert van Manen MP said WorldSkills Australia was the largest and most prestigious trade and skills competition held in Australia, with this year’s event attracting a record 514 competitors from around the country.
“Of the 155 medals presented throughout the event, local competitor Danielle Weaver of Evocca Workplace Training took home a silver medal,” Mr van Manen said.
“This is a fantastic achievement and highlights the opportunities associated with pursuing skills and training.”
The three-day event held in Melbourne saw Australia’s most talented young people go head-to-head in a range of skills including construction steel work, fashion, bricklaying, cookery, auto electrical, and landscape construction.
Gold medal winners have secured the chance to progress on to the global stage and represent Australia at the 44th WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi.
Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews MP congratulated all involved for being a part of such a successful event.
“The WorldSkills Australia National Competition this year attracted a record 514 competitors, 650 event officials and more than 21,000 local, interstate and international visitors,” Minister Andrews said.
“I was particularly proud to see many women take home gold in traditionally male-dominated fields.
“WorldSkills Australia is an outstanding event to inspire and encourage young Australians to find out more about the immense array of career choices available through nationally recognised training.”
Mr van Manen said Australia’s vocational education and training system offers exciting opportunities for young people to develop skills and build successful careers.
“Events such as WorldSkills Australia demonstrate the diverse range of opportunities available today, particularly in industries where quality skills are in high demand.”
