AN UPGRADED section of Stanmore Road at Yatala is now open to traffic, with Stage 3 of a larger works programme now completed.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the works, which have upgraded the stretch between Darlington Drive and Peachey Road, were funded through the Australian Government’s 2012-14 Roads to Recovery Programme.
“We have committed a further $427.2 million in Roads to Recovery Programme funding to Queensland’s local governments over the five years to 2018-19,” Mr Truss said.
“Gold Coast City Council will receive more than $25 million from this new allocation to help continue building better local roads.”
Federal Member for Forde Bert van Manen said the Stage 3 works will help ensure the road is fit for the area’s current and future traffic needs.
“We have now widened this section to a four lane dual carriageway and provided safer pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure,” Mr van Manen said.
“The upgrade will provide a safer road environment for all users, and is expected to carry
6,500 vehicles per day. More than 20 per cent of those will be commercial vehicles.

“Finishing touches, including the installation of traffic signals at the Paterson Road intersection, are expected to be complete by Christmas.”
City of Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the $22 million upgrade of the major road corridor had been included in Council’s recent Transport Strategy 2031.
“The Stanmore Road Stage 3 upgrade is part of the City’s $176 million package of improvements to roads, transport and parking that will be carried out across the Gold Coast in 2014-15,” Cr Gates said.
The project received $5.7 million in funding from the Australian Government and more than $16 million from the Gold Coast City Council.
