Remembrance Day 2012
94 years on from the signing of the Armistice which ended World War One, Australians were encouraged to pause at 11am on Sunday to reflect, remember and commemorate past sacrifice and service.
Federal Member for Forde, Bert van Manen MP, said Remembrance Day provided all Australians with the opportunity to honour the memory of 103,000 Australians who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our nation’s values.
“Over the last 97 years, 103,000 Australians have made the ultimate sacrifice fighting in our nation’s name”, Mr van Manen said.
“This year alone, seven Australians have been killed in action in Afghanistan, fighting to protect the ideals we as Australians hold dear. For the family, friends and loved ones of these seven men, Remembrance Day this year will have added poignancy as the soldiers’ names are added to the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial.”
