Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was treated to a personal tour of the new look Beenleigh & Districts Senior Citizens Centre today.
Federal Member for Forde Bert van Manen invited the Prime Minister to the official opening of the new facilities, which were upgraded with $90,000 from the Federal Government’s Community Development Grants program.
The Prime Minister and Mr van Manen also presented the centre with a $10,000 Stronger Communities grant on the morning, which will fund an IT upgrade for the organisation.
Mr van Manen said the visit was an important opportunity for local seniors to meet the Prime Minister face-to-face.
“The upgrade to this centre was an important commitment from our Government ahead of the 2016 election,” Mr van Manen said.
“The Prime Minister’s presence here today has been much appreciated and the Beenleigh community values his support.
“The kitchen upgrade was designed to be able to meet the growing demands for Meals on Wheels who now deliver over 100 meals per day to those in need in our local community.”
Mr Turnbull commended the centre for its dedication to supporting the wider Beenleigh community.
He said while much of his Queensland visit had been about examining progress on local infrastructure projects, supporting local communities was also high on his agenda.
“I am very glad to see (the grant money) being put to such good use,” Mr Turnbull said.
“This is an example of social infrastructure and it’s just as important for our communities.
“Well done to you all.”
The Beenleigh and Districts Senior Citizens Centre has been operating since 1964 providing services to Beenleigh and the surrounding suburbs.
